LASPCA Service Learning Project

The second graders have been working hard on a Service Learning Project for the Louisiana SPCA. To start, we had some visitors come explain to the students what the LASPCA is, and they even brought in a therapy dog to the classroom. We are so proud of our students who worked hard on the powerpoint presentation, flyers, posters, and donation boxes. Our students had the opportunity to speak to the Lower School and Middle School chapel, as well as the High School Assembly to explain our project and ask for the whole school's participation in collecting items such as recycled newspaper, towels, blankets, Nyla bones, Kong bones, and animal toys. Each student got to make two canvas Pet Adoption bags, catnip toys, ping pong ball toys, and we also made SIXTY blankets to take to the animals. At the culmination of our project, we were able to go on a Field Trip to the LASPCA. The students got to deliver all of the collected items, make "Adopt Me" signs for the kennels, take a tour of the LASPCA, and pet some animals. The kids fell in love with a dog named Leo who got adopted the very next day!

Emily, the therapy dog, and her owner, Diane, talking to us about the LASPCA.

We took a trip to the Middle School and High School to hang up our flyers and posters.

The students have been making blankets during any free time for the past couple of weeks.

The students did such a great job using Paint to draw an image that we ironed onto the canvas bag. They also hand painted a second bag.

We love Leo,

and we love the LASPCA!!

Saint of the Week

Here is an update of our second graders who have recently had their chance at being Saint of the Week. The students are allowed to bring in something for show and tell if they would like to, and 2B has had a classroom full of pets!

100th Day of School!

Our 2nd graders had a blast celebrating the 100th day of school! Their creative writing was "When I am 100 years old...", they had fun with 100 pennies (estimating, stacking, sorting, graphing by year), and we did a timed activity to see how many times they could accomplish different tasks in just 100 seconds. It was fun to reflect back on the first 100 days of second grade and to see how much we have learned :)
